In the early days, at the "Zhisheng Tiantian-2018" drone challenge held for the first time by the Air Force Engineering University, more than 100 teams and more than 800 players from well-known universities and research institutes from the military gathered together to compete on the same stage.
A team from the depths of the desert first appeared and attracted the attention of the audience. Along the way, how do they gather wisdom and overcome their own problems? Let's go back to a year ago.

In the depths of the desert, a certain part of the Eastern War Zone Air Force has focused on military frontier technology since its inception, making innovation a new "engine" for combat effectiveness growth. Over the past year or so, the Department has created a unique team of innovations. With a strong interest in intelligent unmanned equipment, the team members used their spare time to delve into in-depth research and independently developed a number of innovative achievements, becoming the "innovation pioneer" and "technology acquisition" of the department.
This competition is also a test and assessment of the team's innovation ability.


However, it is a long way to go for this young team to really go to the game to win honor.
Since the six-person team that played on behalf of the team had no previous experience in participating in the competition, any theory, platform, and system construction must go through a process of "starting from nothing". Unlike other colleges and institutions, this team does not have the "help" of advanced equipment, there is no "support" for teachers and professors, and there is no "fire fighting" for alumni and seniors. When encountering difficulties, they can only explore and argue for themselves. Find your own solution. Sometimes took a long way, took a detour, but also had to "curve save the country."

 The difficult living environment is a real obstacle in front of the team. The outdoor environment in the northwestern frontier is harsh. Under the icy wind, unmanned aerial vehicles have become problems with normal flight, and the performance of electronic equipment, batteries, and glue has also been greatly affected.

 The core component defect is serious, hardware support is still a difficult problem, the team has to purchase maintenance equipment and tools through online purchasing channels. However, in the depths of the desert traffic is not convenient, often for a week, the Advancement of equipment improvement is difficult.


hese bottlenecks and difficulties have become a kind of experience. So many "can only" and "have to" force the innovative potential of the players.

 In this year, the team was in such a difficult environment, relying on self-learning, "playing" 3D printing technology, digital modeling, graphic matching and other new technologies, designed smart robots, drones and other "micro-innovation" works.

 During the preparation and debugging process, the team "brainstorming" has played a huge role. The team members carefully studied the principle, conducted many experiments, innovated independently, and solved a series of difficult problems.

 The group of six people has a reasonable division of labor and effective planning in route planning, task monitoring, drone control, and tool management. From small aircraft to large aircraft, from manual to semi-automatic, from wheel-type take-off and landing to parachute landing, continuous modification and test flight, continuous improvement of equipment performance, continuous breakthrough, and finally with results, out of the desert, confidence came to the stadium.


The weather on the day of the competition seems not to be very "friendly". Many of the teams 'aircraft unfortunately "died" during the test flight and were often in the final competition. The team's aircraft also had an accident during the morning test flight because of wind shear, damage to the side of the aircraft, and a fracture of the body.
It was a big blow to the young team before they even came out. However, in the face of setbacks, the players showed amazing cohesion and execution. They quickly overcome their frustration and discussed the cause of the accident and the restoration plan at the crash site. In just half an hour, they completed the repair and reinforcement of the aircraft and eventually performed well in the subject of "drone targeted attacks."
On the other hand, on the field of the subject of "real time planning and autonomous evasion of drones(vehicles)", the small car designed by the team attracted a large number of spectators to stop and watch because of its novel form and high technical content. There are also some teachers and professors who have expressed their recognition for their excellent performance and innovative ideas.
In the end, this young team won two third prizes for its impressive performance and scored the "first pot of gold" for innovation in scientific and technological achievements.
